A SHTICKLE TORAH on Rosh Hashana

from Rabbi Salid 5770

We Jews enjoy a very special connection with the Creator.  If we look at the last few parshios and their powerful message, we find them replete with warnings, punishments and curses.  And yet, if we examine the haftoros of those very same parshios, we find nothing but love, joy and promises of the good times that await us in the future.  Indeed, the very last haftorah before Rosh Hashana is the last of the so called haftoros of consolation.  However, we must understand that this combination of fear and love is “what it’s all about.”  Even a small child can walk into a shul on Rosh Hashana and feel this strange and wonderful blend of nervousness mixed with joyful expectancy. It is only because we are so close to Hashem that we feel this.  As children, we all remember a similar feeling with our parents.  We knew that maybe we behaved inappropriately and feared the consequences, yet we knew that since there was such a great love between us, it would always turn out all right.  As parents, we know that our kids misbehave and need a strong guiding hand.  We also know that they are precious to us and we would never want harm to befall them.  FROM THIS WE LEARN that Rosh Hashana is the time to come back into Hashem’s house and declare “Hashem, I know that I have strayed and disobeyed, but now I am back with you and want to be part of the family again.”  No doubt, if Hashem looks into our hearts and sees sincerity, He will embrace us as our parents did and He will give us the bes give us the best year ever.
